EoP 4: Plants & People

The heavy, glorious monsoon rains have well and truly foxed our internet, so this week’s online component is a bit late in going up.  Here’s the slide-show for those who missed it, or wish to go back and review some of the information-packed slides in greater detail:

Our guest teacher for the week, Meredith Hartwell of Flagstaff Native Plant & Seed and CSA fame, has provided a bevy of supplemental information for folks to peruse.  Here’s a link to the Garden Starts CSA page, which has all of Meredith’s newsletter articles from the past two years available (on the right-hand side of the page).  These newsletters are full of great gardening know-how, especially useful to growers in Flagstaff, but well-worth checking out as reference for gardeners in other regions as well.

Weekly Challenges

–  Continue visiting your primary sit spot.  Start visiting another spot.  Visit both places at various times of day.  What’s similar between the two places?  What’s different?

–  Learn the names and identifying characteristics of three non-native species in your area.  Which, if any, native species are they displacing?  What benefits do they provide to the ecosystem at large?  What detriments do they inflict on other species in the area?  Would you recommend their extirpation from the area?  How would that extirpation be carried out, and what would the offending organisms be replaced with?

Design Projects

–  Continue mapping your vision for the site.  Build on your flow maps and start adding detail to any structures, garden areas, nascent forests, etc.  Where should entrances and exits be located?  What species will you plant to make best use of your sites various extant and predicted microclimates?

–  Create a map of your vision for the site from an on-the-ground perspective.  Do the sightlines appear different from this human perspective than they might appear to be from a bird’s-eye point of view?
